IP Cameras in Modern Warfare
Internet-connected cameras have become a valuable intelligence asset in modern warfare, and are used to support intelligence collection and battle damage assessment. We will examine different cases of various actors to show how the targeting and compromise of IP cameras supports intelligence collection, operational planning, and battle damage assessment.
We will touch Chinese and Russian case studies, but the focus will be on a case study that is showing how Iranian threat actors are targeting IP cameras across Middle East and Cyprus since the start of the current war. Our findings suggest that this activity forms part of Iran’s operational doctrine in support of missile operations, in some cases potentially preceding launches, and that tracking such activity from attributed infrastructure may provide an early indicator of follow-on kinetic activity.

Sergey is currently the Director of Threat Intelligence at Check Point, leading the company’s monitoring, analysis and research of cyber threats around the world on tactical, operational and strategic levels.
Prior to Check Point, Sergey led cyber threat intelligence and cyber defense teams in government organizations. More recently, Sergey led the threat intelligence and the research in Q6 Cyber, a US-based cybercrime intelligence company. Sergey is a frequent speaker at industry conferences, including DCC, Underground Economy, BSides, FraudCON, etc.
