At LABScon last year, we showed how hundreds of thousands of cameras ship with backdoors, built to be unmaintainable and ready to spy on you out of the box. Delivered through an ocean of shell companies that supply and launder fake testing certifications onto online retailers. Deceptively sold and designed around subscription lock-in, these devices could be easily adopted for malicious purposes.Â
This year we followed the thread upstream and found the same pattern replicated across other devices - not just for surveillance, but to create an ecosystem that supports China's long term cyber ambitions. Your TV set top box’s hidden residential proxy is some project manager's secondary revenue stream.
In this talk, we will propose a new open source attribution model for tracking the Chinese APT ecosystem.
About Marc Rogers
Marc Rogers is the CTO of AI observability startup nbhd.ai. With a career that spans almost thirty years, he has been hacking since the 1980s and is now a white-hat hacker renowned for hacks like Apple's TouchID and the Tesla Model S.Â
Previously Marc worked as VP of Cyber Strategy at Okta, Head of Security for Cloudflare and spent a decade managing security for the UK operator, Vodafone. He's been a CISO in South Korea and has also co-founded the disruptive Bay Area security startup “Vectra AI”. In his role as technical advisor on “Mr. Robot,” he helped create hacks for the show. For the last 25 years he’s been an organizer and Head of Security for the world’s largest hacking conference: DEF CON.Â
Today while still breaking stuff, Marc works to improve cyber policy, responds to critical incidents, and works to disrupt criminal campaigns.
